Editorial: A new government and the voice and anguish of common Nigeria

The new government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is already losing popularity because of the suffering it plunged Nigerians into by removing the fuel subsidy. The price of transportation skyrocketted that a lot of Nigerians cannot afford to use their vehicles anymore. The price of fuel keep increasing and it affects the price of anything else, food especially. Suddenly, people who were managing before have been so affected that they are now struggling and the poor are now left poorer to the level that people can no longer afford to feed their families or keep their children in school.

The hopelessness that comes with the new hardship is what this government needs to tackle. Despair come with it’s own silent rage that can explode at the slighest provocation. What makes things worse is the lack of vision and mission of the Tinubu administration. Maybe their inability to articulate their grand plan. They have not been able to share their vision of moving Nigeria forward. The 8000 palliative that they were planning to role out that was rejected by Nigerian Labour Congress and most Nigerians makes crystal that Tinubu is lost of idea and so the people advising him.

What the government needs to do is to address people regularly on their activities. Tell Nigerians of the long time and short term solutions to assuage their condition that is as a direct result of the fuel subsidy removal. To leave people in the dark and their condition keep deteriorating will not help the Tinubu administration. Something must be done urgently, especially about transportation which has made the price of foods and other groups in the market quadrupled.

Government is about the people. It is not about politicians and their friends and families, it is about the whole nation. What the Nigerian politician has turned government into is about themselves and what gets into their pockets. At this junction, the Tinubu administration need to make policies that are sustainable that will affect the people directly, if not Nigeria may derail into choas, all due the cost of transportation. It means people can no lonegr afford to go to work five to seven days in a week regularly. Some people can no longer afford transportation for their children to go to school. Some can no longer go about their business. Many who have cars have abundoned their vehicles because of the price of petrol.

The Tinubu administration does not seem to understand the suffering in the land just now. This government needs to sit down and for once take Nigeria and Nigerians seriously by listening to anyone or group who profess solution.
